NNS is excited to be selected to be the Green Team for the months of August, September and October as part of the Youth Recycling Program, which is co-sponsored by the City of Northfield’s Environmental Quality Commission and Waste Management. Established in September 2001, the Youth Recycling Learn and Earn Program has received strong public support. Currently the city has curbside pickup for newspapers but not for corrugated cardboard and other paper products. As a result, quite a bit of recyclable paper is being sent to the landfill.
In exchange for agreeing to monitor the recycling collection box located in the Econofoods parking lot in Northfield, NNS will receive $15 for every ton of mixed paper and cardboard that is deposited in the box during August-October. Board members have agreed to serve as the monitors during this time. A representative of Waste Management will also be visiting some of the classrooms in September to talk to the students about the importance of recycling.
What can families do? Recycle and drop off your mixed paper and cardboard into the Waste Management collection box located at Econofoods or Cub! Save your household mixed paper and cardboard and drop it off in the boxes. Let families, friends and neighbors know that NNS will benefit from their participation! If you have a small business or know someone who does, encourage them to drop off their paper/cardboard as well. The more tons collected, the more money for the nursery school!
DO include these types of paper in the recycling boxes: newspapers, phone books, magazines and catalogs, hardcover and softcover books, construction paper, coloring books, paper of all colors, envelopes of all types, junk mail, file folders, boxboard (cereal, cake, cracker and chip boxes with the plastic liner removed), greeting cards, wrapping paper, corrugated cardboard and pop or beer cartons.
DO NOT place the following items in the boxes: pizza boxes, string, twine, cotton balls, diapers, napkins, paper towels, tissues, cups, coffee filters, photos, slides, carbon paper, wallpaper, waxed paper or anything waxed like milk cartons, frozen food boxes or drink boxes, candy and gum wrappers.
Let’s all do our part for the benefit of the NNS and more importantly, the benefit of our earth! For every ton of paper recycled, we can save 17 trees, 60 lbs of air pollutants and 7,000 gallons of water!
