Northfield Nursery School and the Northfield Boys Soccer Goal Club were recognized and received Green Team Awards for their outstanding recycling education activities at the May 19th Northfield City Council Meeting.

Members of both organizations worked together to monitor the recycling collection boxes at Cub Foods and Econofoods Grocery Stores in Northfield. During February through April, the two youth organizations conducted recycling educational activities to promote the project and helped to recycle 169 tons of cardboard and mixed paper.

The Youth Recycling Program is cosponsored by the City of Northfield’s Environmental Quality Commission and Waste Management. Fifty-one Northfield youth organizations have received the Green Team Recycling Award since the Youth Recycling Program began in 2001.

Margo Underwood, Waste Management District Manager, presented checks in the amount of $1,267.95 to each organization for their help in collecting the 169 tons of mixed paper in the two Recycling Collection Boxes. Waste Management contributes $15/ton for every ton of cardboard and mixed paper collected in the recycling boxes to the Youth Recycling Green Teams.

Established in September, 2001, the Youth Recycling Learn and Earn Program has received strong public support. Residents have dropped off 3,236 tons of cardboard and mixed paper in the collection boxes and Waste Management has contributed $48,540.00 to the youth organizations.
